TMJ Syndrome in Laytonsville-Montgomery Village, MD?

If you place your fingers in front of your ear and open your jaw you will feel lots of little wiggles. This is where your skull’s temporal bone meets and attaches to your mandible which is your jaw. This is called the temporal mandibular joint or the TMJ for short. In and around the TMJ are lots of ligaments, cartilage, fascia, muscles, disks, nerves, and blood vessels that run through and around it.

When there is an inability to open the mouth wide, temporary locking of the jaw or even a clicking or popping sound with opening and closing the mouth, you have most likely developed a condition known as TMJ disorder or syndrome.
What most people may not realize is that other symptoms may present themselves with a TMJ disorder. Other TMJ symptoms can include:

* Neck pain
* Facial pain
* Headaches
* Hearing loss
* Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
* Facial swelling
* Shoulder pain
* Ear and or Eye pain
* Dental pain
* Nausea
* Blurred vision
* Dizziness

The TMJ has also been associated with vertigo, sinus infections, ear infections, asthma and other health disorders.

CAUSES
Dr John D. Laughlin III DDS and researcher points out that 78% of the general population suffers from some amount of TMJ dysfunction.
We have found that dental work can cause many TMJ problems. There are other causes of TMJ syndrome. One major factor is poor posture, spinal misalignments (subluxations), accidents and trauma over the years that can cause the TMJ not to function properly.

Conservative Solutions
TMJ sufferers often will benefit from Chiropractic care because structure and TMJ problems are often found together. Adjusting the spine and or cranial bones can help to relieve or evan correct a TMJ problem.
In our office we have found that often times there exists a relationship between a loss of the cervical curve or abnormal cervical spine (neck) biomechanics and presenting symptoms and disorders of the TMJ. By correcting the spinal misalignment and improving the biomechanics of the neck the TMJ is given the opportunity to heal and to begin functioning normally again. Often, with proper conservative solutions like Chiropractic one can avoid invasive medical interventions.

If you find yourself or a loved one suffering with TMJ related symptoms in Laytonsville-Montgomery Village, getting a Chiropractic examination may be the best option for relief, comfort and ultimately addressing the cause of the problem.
